FHP: New Smyrna Beach Officer Cited For Crash

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. —

A New Smyrna Beach Police Officer was cited for a traffic violation after crashing his cruiser into another car.

Officials say the officer was turning onto S.R. 44 from Glencoe Road around 6:00 Saturday evening when he hit the passenger side door of a silver Mitsubishi. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating if the the accident was caused by wet roads after heavy rain.

The 28-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. She has been released, but FHP says her car may be totaled.

The officer was driving one of the newer patrol cars that were bought with a grant in 2007. It had damage to the front bumper and hood.

FHP told WFTV the officer was cited for violating the right of way. A moving violation in Volusia County is $166 and the officer will have to pay that fine, not the department.
