Jellyfish Sting Hundreds At Central Florida Beach

Lifeguards were busy Saturday at New Smyrna Beach because of Jellyfish.

Lifeguards said the normal tell-tale sign that jellyfish are around is that you see them washed up on the beach, but that wasn't the case this time around.

"It felt like a fork electrocuting my leg. I jumped on the surfboard and pushed my sister off. I started crying and yelling for my brother to come pull me back in," said Suzanne Schloot, who was stung by a jellyfish.

Strange News Photos (LEFT) STRANGE PHOTOSView 99 PHOTOS of Strange News Lifeguards went through several bottles of vinegar that they said helps ease the sting a bit. They were also thankful that, on such a beautiful day, lifeguards didn't have to worry about any other rescues.

"Luckily there's no major water rescues today, which helps out, but we have a lot of swimmers because the oceans are nice and calm That tends to increase the sting ratio," said Dave Foley with Beach Patrol.

Lifeguards said at least 300 people were stung. They also said jellyfish travel at the mercy of the wind and the waves, so they could be around for the rest of what is expected to be a very busy weekend.
