VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
A fisherman says he lost his livelihood when the boat he was on ran aground on New Smyrna Beach.
The 28-foot fishing vessel ran aground early Wednesday morning after he fell asleep.
It took a crane and a crew only a few minutes to pull the boat from the rising tide. The tide threatened to swamp the boat.
"We're not going to get to catch any fish with this boat for quite some time, if ever," said boat owner Tony Sappe.
On Wednesday morning, catch of king mackerel was pulled from the boat. The haul belonged to A. J. Turner, he was the lone captain who brought the boat north from Sebastian Inlet.
"I fished all night and all day, you know. I fished for pretty much two days straight and I was pretty much wore out," said Turner.
Turner said that Tuesday night after he reached his catch limit, he cleaned the boat and decided to take a break. He said he fell asleep.
"I sat down in the chair and got a little too comfortable and it happened," said Turner.
At 3 a.m. Turner and his boat were stranded. Beach patrol brought him to shore.
"It's terrible, you know. I mean, the guy works really hard, he's a good fisherman and you know this can happen to me, you, whoever. It's hard," said Sappe.
Officials say Turner will not face fines for the accident, but Sappe said he might have to scrap the boat.
The Coast Guard is investigating the accident, but officials say the boat was not an environmental concern.
Sappe said he estimates the accident will cost him at least $40,000.
