BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —
Brevard County's two largest cities teamed up in an effort to make the streets safer by cracking down on drug activity.
Melbourne and Palm Bay police officers targeted the Babcock Street corridor during Operation Rocky Road on Friday.
During the operation, uniform and undercover officers from the two departments focused their traffic enforcement efforts on Babcock street between Florida Avenue and University Boulevard.
Authorities said the Babcock corridor is well-known for its illegal drug traffic.
"We statistically run data all over the strip and we found about 60 percent of our drug arrests come from this corridor," said Sgt. John Chapman of the Melbourne Police Department.
During the day-long operation, more than a dozen officers made eight arrests, including charges for narcotics crimes, a suspended license and a community control violation involving a homicide case, police said.
According to police, in addition to the arrests, their presence alone, in operations like Friday's, is often enough to curtail illegal drug activity, for a time.
Melbourne and Palm Bay police anticipate there will be more operations last week's.
