VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —

Firefighters spent Monday afternoon working to keep a brush fire away from some homes near Ormond Beach.

The 70-acre brush fire burned near Eagle Walk Drive, just west of Ormond Beach.

By 4:30 p.m. firefighters had the fire under control and were working to put out hotspots.

Firefighters said that three homes were threatened earlier in the day.

Resident Robin Roussos said the fire burned close to her house.

"I was praying that the house wouldn't burn down," said Roussos. "It came pretty close to theĀ backyard, and the firemen came out here and thank God they put out the fire."

The fire started near State Road 40. Firefighters said they suspect a discarded cigarette could have started the fire.

Fire officials said that fire lines were quickly cut and the wind helped by pushing the fire toward a swamp. No buildings were destroyed in the fire.

"They're pushing lines out and we're going to be doing mop up tonight," said John Pasqualle of Volusia County Fire.

Firefighters will keep an eye on hotspots Monday night and will be on hand Tuesday morning to make sure there are no flareups.
