VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
One of Casey Anthony's former attorneys, Cheney Mason, one of the legendary lawyers, was hospitalized on Friday after getting sick at an event, WFTV learned. An ambulance brought Mason to Halifax Medical Center in Volusia Countyfrom a university where he was supposed to speak with journalism students.
Students and officials with Bethune-Cookman University said they expected him to speak at a mass media conference, but he was sick from the moment he arrived.
Mason, who helped Casey win an acquittal on murder charges, is known for stirring up controversy with his distaste for the media, even making lewd gestures at the camera.
Students told WFTV that Mason appeared disoriented, had slurred speech and he looked physically ill.
"When he did come in, obviously there was something wrong, so we immediately called 911 and gave him some water. It just happened just that quick," student Wendy Gustama said.
Some have speculated that Cheney was having a heart attack, but HIPPA laws prevent the hospital from telling WFTV about his medical condition.
