Construction crews unearthed what appear to be human remains on Monday.

Orlando police blocked off the area near East Michigan Street and South Fern Creek Avenue after a skull was found.

From 1907 to 1961, the lot was used as a potter's field. Orange Hill cemetery was the final resting place of about 500 people whose families could not afford burial, and only five plots have markers, all of them dating back to the early 1940s.

Since the cemetery was closed, the property was occasionally used as a park until the county installed a marker and signs, warning people to stay out.

Sheriff's detectives spent some time Monday afternoon, but quickly concluded it was nothing more than an accident.

Florida has an unmarked burial law. If the workers knew they were digging in a cemetery, they could face charges. Investigators said the men did not realize what the lot was.

As for the human remains, they will be transferred to the medical examiner.
