ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
A convicted hit-and-run driver, who WFTV caught on camera driving while he had a suspended license, was sent back to jail Monday.
Ronald Moffett was sentenced on Monday and will spend 60 days behind bars.
WFTV was in court when Moffett was ordered back to jail.
Moffett had a slight smile on his face moments before a judge sentenced him to 60 days in jail. He never looked at WFTV's camera and showed no emotion as he was put in handcuffs.
Moffett was convicted of hitting Jerry Cardwell with his car in 2008 and leaving him on the side of the road.
Cardwell is now 21 years old and is in a vegetative state. His parents care for him around the clock in their home.
"He wrecked my life, he wrecked my wife's life, my whole family is distraught still to this day," said said Jerry Cardwell's father, Jeff Cardwell.
Moffett served just over a year in jail for that crash, and his license was suspended, but that didn't stop him from driving.
Not long after he walked out of jail, Moffett was charged in another hit-and-run.
In April, a WFTV investigation caught him driving repeatedly. We even followed him to a bowling alley.
The video led to a new charge against Moffett for driving with a suspended license.
A plea deal in the case resulted in Monday's two-month sentence.
"For the next 60 days, it's nice to know he's behind bars because then people on the streets are safe. They don't have to worry about running into him or him running into them. They're actually safe for the next 60 days," said Jeff Cardwell.
But it's not enough, as far as Jerry Cardwell's father is concerned.
Jeff Cardwell said he does not believe Moffett should ever drive again.
"He should be in jail as long as my son is in a hospital bed," said Jeff Cardwell.
