Daytona Beach police said a man was using his convenience store to sell illegal merchandise and synthetic marijuana.

Investigators said Bassam Abu-Diab also allowed Internet gambling and operated an illegal pawn shop at the 4M Food Mart on North Ridgewood Avenue.

WFTV was there when the suspect was arrested, but he said he was only helping someone.

Investigators said the suspect knew what he was getting himself into when he bought stolen goods and sold them at the food mart.

"I helped somebody to buy gas, to purchase gas for $40. That's what it is," said Abu-Diab.

Abu-Diab could be connected to 32-year-old John Leo, who was arrested Sunday on charges that he stole kitchen supplies from an offsite property of the Daytona International Speedway.

Investigators believe Leo was selling the supplies to Abu-Diab's 4M food store which they said he ran like a pawn shop.

"He's not licensed to operate as a pawn shop or anything remotely like a pawn shop, but that's exactly what he was running and through interviews he agrees," said Detective Scott Frantz of the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Police said among the stolen goods at the store, they found a $3,500 glass display for drinks, which Abu-Diab said he paid $40 for.

In the past year, police have raided several stores like this for selling stolen goods.

Abu-Diab is still being booked into the Volusia County jail and there is not yet word from police on what charges he'll face.
