ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
Orange County Deputies said a FAMU band student died after the Florida Classic game Saturday night.
Deputies said 26-year-old Robert Champion was found unconscious on a bus outside of the Rosen Plaza Hotel on International Drive shortly before 10:00 p.m. Saturday. Officials said Champion was transported to Doctor Phillip's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators told WFTV that Champion became sick in the parking lot and complained of trouble breathing, prior to his death. Deputies said friends of Champion called 911 and performed CPR.
Champion was a drum major for the FAMU band.
"What makes it easier for me to take it is he lived a life and did what he wanted to do and reached the level he wanted to get to," said his father, Robert Champion.
The school's band director said in a statement: "We are in shock. He was a very fine drum major who was of excellent character and very trustworthy. I had not told him yet, but he was slated to be the head drum major next year."
Orange County deputies said the death investigation is ongoing, however no foul play was suspected.
