ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
Deputies in Orange County said they arrested two drivers at a street race over the weekend. Investigators said more than 150 people showed up for the race.
According to deputies, Johnathan Rodriguez and Elvin Smith were caught racing on Presidents Drive.
"There have been plenty of people dying because of similar situations, so there should not be any kind of racing of that nature," said Orange County resident Monique Brewer.
The arrests are just two of several that have been made since WFTV went undercover in November to get video of street racers, and learned that drivers are traveling to Orange County specifically to race.
Some believe that it is because most of the time deputies don't chase street racers. Deputies said that is in order to protect innocent drivers. In most cases, deputies will cite spectators.
Deputies said that they waited until the drivers finished the race and then they moved in for the arrests.
WFTV's Tim Barber looked into Rodriguez' and Smith's backgrounds and found out they each have nearly 20 traffic citations, including several tickets for careless driving and speeding.
Deputies said Presidents Drive is a populardrag-racing strip and they are working to put a stop to the racing.
