Drivers will soon get a direct connection from Florida's turnpike to the Greenway.

The more than $20 million interchange in south Orange County is the last toll road the Expressway Authority needs to connect to the turnpike.

WFTV drove on one of the only direct routes on the turnpike from Osceola County to the Orlando International Airport, and it costs commuters $2.25 in tolls and is 11 miles from where the new interchange would be built.

The new route would only cost $1.50 and cut the drive time in half, but it doesn't help every driver.

The new interchange will only be a half interchange, which means drivers will only be able to get off the turnpike and onto State Road 417. It won’t work in reverse for Greenway drivers who want to get on the turnpike.

The Turnpike Authority is responsible for building the other half, and there are no plans to complete it in the next five years.

A spokesperson told WFTV there's not enough traffic flow in the opposite direction to support construction costs.

Construction is scheduled to start during the summer. The interchange will take a year and a half to complete.
