ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
Orange County investigators said a San Francisco man serving time for robbing three banks left his halfway house in California and was found in Orlando.
Investigators said Roy Lacy, 31, robbed at least two banks in Orange County.
Lacy is covered in tattoos, including a San Francisco Giants tattoo on his throat and "(Expletive) SFPD" on his knuckles.
"At first I thought it was punk rock like, '[expletive] them cops,' you know. But after that I was like, 'Man this is dumb. This is going to get me caught one day,'" said Lacy in an interview with Channel 9's Renee Stoll.
The tattoos did get him caught, but investigators said Lacy's tattoos helped them tie him to the two bank robberies in Orange County.
Lacy had just been released to a halfway house after serving time in a California prison for robbing banks. But he escaped the halfway house.
Lacy and his girlfriend, Michelle Maxwell, came to Orlando.
Lacy said the two soon ran out of money. So he went back to what he knew could get him quick cash -- robbing banks.
"I said, 'Can you give me the money?' It's not like I said, went in there with a pistol, tried to hurt anyone. Honestly if they would have told me no, I would have turned around and walked out," he said.
Deputies said Lacy started at a Chase Bank in south Orange County. They said on Monday he struck again at a bank in the Dr. Phillips area where he went from teller to teller asking for all their large bills, $18,000 in all.
"I just knew from the last time they will only give you $5 to $1,500. You might as well just get a couple of them if you're doing it," said Lacy.
Bank surveillance photos and Lacy's tattoos, particularly the ones on his knuckles that say something negative about police, soon led investigators to the Holiday Inn where they found the couple and arrested them.
"I want to apologize to the tellers. I heard I scared a couple of them. That really bothered me because that's not what I was trying to do," said Lacy.
Maxwell is charged with driving the getaway car, but Lacy said she didn't know he was robbing the banks, even though police said cash was found in her purse.
Police said they have also connected the pair to a bank robbery in San Diego.
