Family uses tracking device to help nab suspected burglar

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. —

Deputies credited a quick-thinking Lake County family and their knowledge of technology for helping to nab a suspected thief.

Investigators said Billy Ray Lightell was arrested on charges of stealing an iPad from a home near U.S. 27, while the residents were sleeping.

"It's crazy because I have three kids and God forbid they woke up, I don't know what would happen," said the homeowner, who did not want to be identified.

Lightell is accused of breaking into a home on Monday and stealing more than $11,000 in valuables.

Luckily, the family subscribed to "Mobile Me." For a fee, the device will track any Apple product.

They discovered the iPad was right up the street with their laptop, according to deputies.

Lake County deputies said Lightell sold them. They said he lives just five houses away from the alleged victims.

So far, deputies said they have not been able to recover the other stolen merchandise.

Investigators said Lightell is also accused of a second burglary that same night in Clermont.

Deputies said they retrieved the stolen items from that break-in.
