ORLANDO, Fla. —
Family and friends of hit-and-run victim Aaron Jones gathered at the crash site on Sunday in hopes of finding the suspect who killed the 28-year-old Orlando resident.
On Friday, WFTV uncovered new evidence that helped the Florida Highway Patrol in its investigation into the deadly hit-and-run.
The accident happened Friday on Goldenrod Road near Valencia College Lane around 1:30 a.m., but FHP didn't have much to go on after the crash until Channel 9’s Racquel Asa notified them that a nearby surveillance camera captured it all. Troopers told WFTV what they saw in the video changes the course of the investigation.
On Sunday, family and friends of Jones handed out flyers and waved signs, urging people for help. They hope to find the driver who struck and killed Jones, then fled the scene.
"The individual he or she who did this needs to be apprehended," said Jones' friend Juan Bermudez.
Jones was hit by a vehicle while riding his scooter and the driver who hit him left the scene, according to troopers. He died a short time later at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Family members said they want justice.
"They need to catch this person, I think it will help all of us start to grieve a little bit better," said Jason Milton, Jones' relative.
The group said they are seeking justice for Jones and they won't stop until the hit-and-run driver is behind bars.
No suspects have been identified, but the new surveillance footage could help FHP in its investigation, officials said.
“Now that we know what type of vehicle, now that we know the vehicle's proximity, it's just a matter of time before we catch the owner and ask the owner who was driving the vehicle,” said Sgt. Kim Montes with FHP.
Troopers are asking anyone with information to come forward.
