NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. —
Police have arrested a man suspected of stealing electronics and other items from 10 boats in New Smyrna beach.
Security cameras at the Angler's Club were rolling as the thief casually moved from boat to boat over the weekend, forcing his way into the cabins in broad daylight and making off with electronics like depth finders, GPS and marine radios.
"This was some of the clearest surveillance video I've seen in a long time," said Sgt. Eugene Griffith of the New Smyrna Beach Police Department.
The picture was so good that when the folks at the club saw a man walking by who looked exactly like the picture, they decided to go after him.
"It was identical, even wearing the same clothes, the same hoodie and the same cap," said McKay. "I went back inside and told some of my colleagues the guy was in the parking lot."
Police said retired South Carolina state Sen. Woody McKay spotted the suspect in the parking lot.The suspect, 51-year-old Michael Alderman, took off running and the 72-year-old McKay followed.
"Finally, I caught up to him, grabbed the back of his hoodie and tackled him," said McKay. "(I) got on top of him and held him until the police got there."
Alderman is being held on one burglary charge, but police expect to file additional charges against him later in the week.
