A truck driver suffered second-degree burns after his trailer spilt sulfuric acid on Highway 60 Monday morning, causing officials to close both eastbound and westbound lanes of the roadway.

Polk County Fire Rescue said the driver of the truck sustained second-degree burns over 10 percent of the body.  They said the burns were limited to his lower extremities. He was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.

Officials said the trailer was carrying six pods of sulfuric acid, with each pod holding 250 gallons. 

The road is closed at Rifle Range Road in Bartow. Rifle Range Road is also shut down in northbound and southbound.

Officials said at this time it is unknown how long the roads will be shut down.
