Law would allow Fla. teachers to carry loaded guns on campuses

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. —

Florida lawmakers are considering a plan that would put guns in the hands of school teachers. Lake County's newest school board member was criticized for suggesting the same thing last fall.

The bill would allow faculty members to carry concealed weapons in school.

Parent Frank Herbert said he isn't comfortable with that idea.

"I could understand security at the schools and locked doors, that's one thing, but carrying a weapon on campus, I don't agree with that," said Herbert.

Lake County School Board member Bill Mathias asked the district to consider a similar plan in January, right after the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Lake County currently spends $2 million-a-year to staff some schools with resource officers.

"It would give you a way to protect your children without breaking the bank, basically," said Mathias.

Before any teacher or school administrator could carry a gun on a school campus they would be required to complete a certain number of hours of training; just having a concealed weapons permit isn't enough.

The training would be similar to that of a security guard, with 32 hours of class time and additional training to make sure teachers know when and how to use the gun.

"I would still want the sheriff's department or law enforcement involved and really certify and properly train them," said Mathias.

The bill wouldn't require the school district to arm a staff member. It merely gives them the option to do it.

Sen. Alan Hayes of Umatilla is sponsoring the bill in the state Senate.
