BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —
Officials said a brush fire in Brevard County is fully contained as of midday Sunday.
At one point, the 1,000-acre fire caused troopers to close State Road 407, but it has since reopened.
Crews extinguished a few hot spots in 1,000-acre area.
The fire burned near Brevard County's St. John's Wildlife Refuge.
Brevard County residents Ashley Randor and James Jenkins told WFTV they saw the fire on their way back from the beach.
"It was kind of scary and then we saw the fire trucks when we had pulled up," said Randor.
Officials said the blaze started around 2:00 p.m. Saturday near the Fay Lake Wilderness Park and spread quickly.
"The goal is to contain the fire within some physical boundaries that we have, like the highways, and then we are in the process of burning that out," said Brevard County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Jeffrey Money.
Officials said they aren't sure how the fire started and it will be investigated.
The fire didn't threaten any homes, but residents said the glowing orange night sky was a scary sight.
"It's right behind our house, that's crazy," said Randor.
