Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a two-story home in Cocoa early Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to the home on the 4200 block of Bass Road around 3:15 a.m. Officials said the occupants of the home were awakened by smoke alarms going off in the house.

When firefighters got to the home, it was reported to be completely on fire. Crews began pulling hose lines to fight the fire and protect two neighboring homes.

According to officials, there is only one fire hydrant in the area and it wasn't enough to supply all of the fire trucks on scene. The crews used a boat ramp to get water from nearby Lake Poinsett. Additionally, three mobile water vehicles had to be called in to help fight the fire.

The occupants of the home, and man and a woman, were able to escape uninjured. A dog did not make it out of the home and died in the fire, officials said.

According to officials, it took firefighters more than an hour to extinguish the fire and the home is a total loss. Firefighters from the Cocoa, Mims and Four Communities fire departments assisted Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Officials have not said what may have caused the fire and it remains under investigation by local and state investigators.
