GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. —
A church bus crash in Gwinnett County, Ga. has sent more than a dozen children to the hospital.
It happened along Interstate 85 south of Steve Reynolds Blvd.
The Gwinnett County Police Department said 18 children were transported Gwinnett Medical Center to be checked out. Police said the injuries appear to be minor.
Thirty-one people had to wait for another bus to come and pick them up.
The children range in age from 10-16 years old. They were on their way for a Catholic youth conference from Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala, Fla.
Police said the vans were traveling in a caravan. A pickup truck that was leading the caravan of vehicles swerved so not to hit some debris in the road. One of the buses hit the truck and the other bus swerved to not hit anyone, leading to those injuries.
Police have been working with another church nearby to arrange for another bus to pick up the remaining kids that were stranded from the wreck.
Officers have also started contacting the kids' parents.
"They were started to be notified about 15-20 minutes after the accident happened. The fire department did a great job getting the kids Gatorade, conditioning water to all the children and all the people involved," said Officer Ross Hancock of the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Hancock said the some of the children received scrapes and cuts from the wreck, along with others complaining of neck and back pain.
