ORLANDO, Fla. —
A new $7 million facility for the homeless is months away from opening and when it does, Orlando will have a new approach to dealing with the homeless.
Coalition for the Homeless officials said the case-managed approach will help prevent many men from becoming chronically homeless.
"It's changed how I look at life, about picking up a drink again," said homeless man Reggie Bible.
When the new men's service center opens it will open the door for hundreds more men like Bible to get help.
One of the noticeable differences people will notice when the center opens is that it won't be empty like the men's pavilion is during the day.
Currently men are put on the street at 7 a.m.
In the new facility men who are not out looking for jobs will meet with case workers and will be taking classes.
Some people have concerns that in order to make way for the new, Orlando's only emergency shelter, for those who show up drunk or high, will be torn down. The pavilion will be torn down to provide staff and visitor parking.
Bob Brown, director of Heart of Florida United Way, said the city of Miami had to learn the hard way when it tore its emergency shelter down -- only to have to rebuild it.
"Hundreds and hundreds of men were sleeping under the freeway," said Brown.
If Orlando has a similar experience there might be no turning back.
"I don't know where the shelter would be," said Brown. "It's not going to be in College Park or in Winter Park. You can go through the list."
The director of the Coalition for the Homeless said there will be a generous introductory phase before men must commit to a program. That requires them to make an effort.
"What we want to do is be able to expose them to an array of services that will potentially transform their lives. We're not prepared yet to listen to the guy who says, 'No, don't want it,'" said Brent Trotter of the Coalition for the Homeless.
Bible thinks men will respond.
"When you step in now you feel like you can be somebody," said Bible.
The Coalition for the Homeless will continue to provide emergency shelter services on cold nights.
