FLAGLAR COUNTY, Fla. —
Officials in Flagler County Beach are trying to solve a marijuana mystery after large packages were collected from an apparent drug smuggling boat on Monday.
There are still pounds of drugs washing up on the shore, but authorities said they don't know where it all came from.
Skywitness 9HD was over the scene near A1A on Monday afternoon.
As the bricks of marijuana started washing ashore on Beverly Beach beachgoers dove into the choppy surf to help Florida Fish and Wildlife officers bring the drugs in.
"At this point and time the information I have is that it's pretty much a mystery," said Lt. Steve Zukowsky of Florida Fish and Wildlife.
Even fish and wildlife officers were puzzled by the bizarre discovery.
Nearly 150 pounds of marijuana were on board the boat that capsized near Jacksonville earlier this month, and apparently floated south.
"The information we have so far is we have no identifiable markings on the boat so we have no origin reference county or state or country, anything like that," said Zukowsky.
Officials said the U.S. Coast Guard spotted the boat and tagged it Sept. 2. The boat had no markings or registration. But the Coast Guard didn't know there were drugs inside.
The boat will be removed Tuesday morning.
Fish and Wildlife said if any beachgoers find any marijuana they should contact the Flagler County Sheriff's Office immediately.
