Orlando working to turn sewage into energy

ORLANDO, Fla. —

The city of Orlando is teaming up with a company to turn sewage into energy.

The city collaborated with Super Water Solutions to develop a system to heat sludge to extreme temperatures, which would get rid of the waste, but create energy in the process that the city could sell.

Orlando could make $60 million over the next 20 years.

However, one commissioner told WFTV the city may be getting shortchanged, since inflation wasn't factored in when the city set the price at which it would sell the energy.

"Depending on what inflation's going to be, you could easily double the amount of money coming out of this contract," said Phil Diamond, of the Orlando City Council. "I think it's a great idea, but we could've done better."

The public works director said the company is still looking for investors and they did not want to factor any unknowns into the deal.

The city insists the process is not harmful to the environment or people.
