MOUNT DORA, Fla. —

A Mount Dora police officer was hit by a truck during a brutal fight with a man he was trying to arrest late Tuesday night, authorities said.

Witnesses said it began when Robert Whiley showed up at a church on Grant Avenue and North Highland Street and began attacking his wife.

Police were called, but witnesses said that didn't stop Whiley from going after her again.

When an officer tried to intervene, Whiley attacked him.

During the altercation, the 30-year-old officer was sideswiped by a red truck and he fell to the ground.

Once the officer was down, witnesses said, Whiley continued the attack and at one point an officer used a Taser on him but Whiley was able to pull out the prongs.

Witnesses said the man driving the red truck, 48-year-old Samuel DeBose, was able to calm Whiley down, giving an officer time to get him in handcuffs.

Whiley's mother showed up at the scene.

"I got a call from my niece; she said that my son had been shot," Jacquelyn Turner said.

Her son was OK and being combative with officers while he was in handcuffs.

"He got kind of rowdy when the police was talking trash to me, he said y'all leave my momma alone, because f--- all y'all up," Turner said.

She said she also saw the injured officer lying on the ground.

"The police officer looked like he was hurt," Turner said.

The officer was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

The driver of the truck was not found at fault, according to a Florida Highway Patrol investigation.

Whiley is being held in Lake County Jail on $250,000 bail.
