A 57-year-old Orange County teacher was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old Jones High School student, according to authorities.

Officials said Hugh Broomes was arrested on Tuesday on charges of having sex with the student while on campus.

Broomes allegedly had sex with the teen 10 times since November.

Police documents show the two began texting each other in September, leading up to the incidents.

Broomes was ordered to be held without bail Wednesday when he appeared before a judge.

The judge also ordered that Broomes cannot have contact with minors.

"I didn't think he was that type of person. I never seen him like talk to girls or be all up on them like that, so I'm not sure," said former student Alexis Wilson.

Wilson was in Broomes' class two years ago. She said Broomes was strict, but fun.

"He was cool, he was a cool teacher," Wilson said.

Outside the classroom, officials said told Broomes coached women's soccer.

"That's not supposed to be in the schools, anywhere, especially no grown man," Kenu Nugent, the father of a Jones High student, said. "Get him out of this school, for real."

Police said a school resource officer found out about the alleged incidents and reported them Monday, but won't say where on the campus they allegedly happened.

However, police said they have enough evidence to charge him with 10 counts of sexual battery to a child and unlawful sexual activity.

Broomes has been a teacher at Jones High School since 2005 with a one-year gap in his employment with Orange County Schools.

He faced disciplinary action once in 2007. Officials could not say what he was accused of doing or how he was punished, but he was back in the classroom in 2009.

District officials said their records don't show if that year gap was because of the 2007 case.

Officials said Broomes was suspended with pay, but that could change following Tuesday's arrest.

The school district said its internal investigation can take up to a couple months.
