ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. —
A suspected burglar was charged with breaking into the same store twice in less than a week, according to Altamonte Springs police.
Surveillance video from the Gold Mine 704 on State Road 434 shows the man, who police said is Gary Grimes, taking several tries to break through the front window, both times he broke in.
Although Grimes didn't have a weapon on his way into the store he was charged with armed burglary, police said.
According to the police, the second time Grimes broke into the store he took a sword, and that bumped the charges to armed burglary.
Police said Grimes got allegedly got away with $20,000 worth of gold. They said he dropped some on the way out of the store.
According to police, the next time he took a computer, along with a vintage camera and a civil war era sword.
"This is $2,500 minimum, if you were to sell it," said store owner Luis Hernandez, referring to the sword.
Police said eyewitnesses called and reported the break-in. They said officers were on the scene less than two minutes later.
They used a helicopter and a police dog to track the Grimes.
Police said Grimes had computer wire wrapped around his leg. They said he told officers he had never seen it and that he thought it was a vine. They said they also found some of the jewelry stuffed into his pack of cigarettes.
"I asked the officers, 'You guys go to Dunkin' Donuts and just leave him with me for just a little bit. I just want to talk to him. I promise I will not torture him in anyway," said Hernandez.
Hernandez said the gold lost in the first burglary has not been recovered.
He said he has a warning for anyone else thinking of doing this.
"Don't do it again, because you may be surprised who is waiting inside," said Hernandez.
