VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
Police in Volusia County said Wednesday they still haven't made an arrest after a teenager was attacked in Port Orange on her way home from a store Tuesday night.
Police told WFTV's Jeff Deal the 17-year-old girl was walking home from a store alone when a man came out of the woods on Dunlawton Avenue near Memorial Park and grabbed her. They said he dragged her into the woods and attacked her.
But the girl was able to fight the man off and he fled, police said. The girl then called 911.
"It does appear this was a random act," said Lt. David Meyer of the Port Orange Police Department.
Law enforcement officials weren't able to release a composite sketch of the attacker because he was wearing a mask to cover his face.
Port Orange police and city work vehicles surrounded the woods on Wednesday not far from where the girl was attacked. A K-9 unit scoured the woods looking for any clues or evidence on the crime.
WFTV was there when police walked an unidentified man out of the woods.
"Sir, did you have anything to do with attacking that woman last night?" Deal asked him.
"I don't even know what they're talking about," he replied.
He was not in handcuffs, and police have not said if he has anything to do with the case. But he was put in an unmarked police car and driven from the scene.
Investigators pulled bags of potential evidence from the woods while city crews pulled out what appeared to be part of a tent.
Reports from the scene indicate whomever attacked the teen tried to sexually assault her, but police have not confirmed that.
The suspect is described as a white man, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall.
