POLK COUNTY, Fla. —

A Polk County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a gunman after he and his partner were wounded is Florida's officer of the year for 2011.

Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi presented the award Tuesday to Deputy Michael Braswell in Tallahassee.

Braswell and now-retired Deputy Paul Fairbanks stopped a suspicious-looking bicyclist in Lakeland in June 2010.

The bicyclist pulled a gun and shot both deputies. Braswell returned fired and wounded the young man.

When he ignored warnings and tried to recover his gun, the deputy fired again, killing the suspect.
