The U.S. Postal Service has announced that it plans to close a mail-sorting facility in Lake Mary.
The plan is to fold operations of the Lake Mary location into a similar facility at Orlando International Airport.
The Lake Mary facility employs over 400 workers.
Congress is considering allowing the Postal Service to adopt a two-day service standard on first-class mail, which would allow it operate with far fewer sorting facilities.
The Postal Service also announced plans to consolidate sorting facilities in Lakeland and St. Petersburg into a center in Tampa.
Postal workers by contract cannot be laid off, but they can be transferred or moved into different jobs.
The Lake Mary sorting facility could be closed any time from June of this year to February of 2013.
