A rusty piece of metal from a 43-year-old Space Needle came crashing down onto the Daytona Beach pier over the weekend, causing officials to block of an area of the pier.

Workers will now begin tearing down the needle before Mother Nature causes any more pieces to break away and fall 160 feet below.

On Monday, the pier remained open despite the incident, causing concern for some residents.

"We've examined it. There is no danger, obviously, or we would close the pier," said Daytona Beach Mayor Glenn Ritchey.

No injuries were reported.

Daytona Beach officials said demolition will start Monday night and will cost about $60,000 -- another expense for the city, which recently spent millions to renovate the rest of the pier.

City officials said a construction engineer told them the Space Needle was safe, which is why it wasn't torn down months ago.

The city has confirmed the pier will closed between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday while crews remove the Space Needle.
