SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. —
Hundreds of Seminole County parents found out where their children will most likely be going to school next year.
On Monday night, the school board approved the superintendent's controversial recommendations to rezone elementary schools, with a few minor changes.
Mike Hettenback waited with his three daughters at Monday's meeting, hoping his youngest won't have to go through the rezoning his other girls have had to go through before.
"It's emotional. They have to make new friends. It's hard. They get attached to the school they're at and the teacher," said Hettenback.
At the meeting he learned his daughter will remain in her school, but many aren't so lucky.
Some parents learned their children are going having to be bused to school, when they were able to walk before.
"My car was broken down this weekend. I would have no way to get them to Winter Springs," said one parent during the meeting.
Most students who are changing schools will be assigned to a school. But students in two areas the district is calling clusters will get a choice.
Students in Phase 1, north of County Road 46A, will have three schools to choose from.
Students in Phase 2, south of that border and north of Lake Mary Boulevard, will also have three schools to choose from.
Parent Carmen Garcia told WFTV's Renee Stoll that she believes the cluster system exposes her child to diversity.
"It was just amazing, because they all walked up together laughing and joking. They don't see the color.
Some other parents see the cluster as something negative.
"I feel there should be a zone for every school," said parent Toni Rantae.
The final vote on the north phase will be April 1.
The superintendent expects to have his recommendation on east and west phases by this week.
