Mystery surrounds death of mother, adult daughter

Titusville, Fla. —

There are still several questions surrounding the mysterious deaths of a Brevard County mother and her adult daughter.

An elderly man, 69-year-old Jerry Lee Hawkins, called 911 after he found his 65-year-old ex-wife and adult daughter's bodies dead on their beds inside the home on Hallum Drive, just north of Titusville. Hawkins told dispatchers that Katherine Myers and Jerri Brown were cool to the touch.

Deputies think they may have been dead for days. Still detectives have no idea how they died.

Investigators wore hazmat gear as they combed the house for evidence Monday night.

"No signs of a struggle or disturbance or anything like that," said Major J.J. Woolsey, of the Brevard County Sherriff's Office. "There's no signs of trauma, no signs of foul play. It is suspicious, only because we located two deceased within the same residence."

Detectives said the women experienced flu-like symptoms two weeks before they died.

Both women were found dead in their separate bedrooms, both fully dressed, according to investigators. One was in bed and the other was lying on top of the covers. Investigators said one of the women was watching a movie when she died.

Neighbors told Florida Today newspaper that the women had moved into the house recently to help Hawkins, who was becoming unable to take care of himself.

When emergency crews arrived they had to rush the elderly man to Parrish Medical Center in Titusville for respiratory problems.

Detectives said he has dementia and that he does not know when he last checked on his wife and daughter.

"The investigators are working on finding out those answers," said Woolsey.

Investigators have ruled out carbon monoxide, but they have not ruled out any other type of poisoning.

Deputies are awaiting toxicology reports on the women.  Officials say foul play is not suspected.
