ORMOND BEACH, Fla. —
Authorities have identified a man shot and killed by Volusia CountySheriff's deputies after he threatened them with a gun Wednesday evening, according to Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said deputies were looking for 52-year-old Kenneth Morrow after he allegedly sent text messages threatening suicide to his girlfriend.
According to investigators, they were able to track Morrow’s cellphone and found him and his parked motorcycle on Highbridge Road near Ormond Beach at 4 p.m.
Investigators said Morrow had a gun in his hand and told deputies to stay away. He continued to text suicidal messages and demands that deputies leave him alone, investigators said.
According to investigators, while deputies attempted to talk to Morrow by calling and texting his cellphone, he fired his gun one time.
Shortly after 6 p.m., according to investigators, Morrow advanced on the deputies with his gun. When he refused deputies orders to stop, the deputies shot at Morrow, killing him, investigators said.
The two deputies involved in the shooting were 38-year-old Christopher Jones and 34-year-old Joel Hernandez.
Jones has been with the Sheriff’s Office since May 2002 and Hernandez has been with the Sheriff’s Office since February 2003. Both are on paid administrative leave.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
