Waffle House 911 'purse-dial' lands 2 in jail on drug charges

PALM BAY, Fla. —

Investigators said a 911 call that a woman never intended to make landed her and a man in handcuffs.

Police told WFTV's Kevin Oliver that the call came in from a Waffle House in Palm Bay.

Dispatchers didn't hear a lot at first.

You probably know someone who has put their phone in their pocket and accidentally called a friend. In this case, one woman put her phone in her purse, dialed 911 and then started talking drugs.

Operator: "911, do you need police fire or ambulance? Hello…hello."

When Palm Bay police dispatchers originally got the call with no response, they didn't know what they had so they listened and ended up getting an earful from a man and woman discussing their drugs.

Suspect: "Don't do all of it. Some of it, but don't do all of it."

At the same time, someone else witnessed what appeared to be a drug deal in the parking lot. The witness called police. Police put two and two together and caught up with the couple on an empty road.

This was heard on the woman's phone as officers pulled in behind them.

Suspect: "Oh my God. My God it's a cop ... Oh my gosh, put it up. Put the [expletive] thing up!"

The tone of the woman's voice changed as police asked for identification.

Suspect: "Hi. Was I going too fast?

Officer: "What are you doing all over the road?"

Suspect: "That was me, sir. My tire is wobbly ... is wobbling a lot."

The 25-year-old female driver was arrested for driving under the influence. Her passenger, Joshua Justice, was arrested for possession of drugs. Police not only found cocaine, but they had the phone call as evidence.

Suspect: "Can I ask why?

Officer: "Your phone's on."

Suspect: "My phone's on?"

Officer: "We heard everything you said about all your little drugs, the police behind you."

Suspect: "What?"

Officer: "Ma'am step out of the car, ma'am."

The woman was taken to the hospital because officers suspect she was high and wanted to have her checked out.

Justice had been out of prison for less than a year, and he's now back in jail.
