VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —
Volusia County firefighters are still keeping a close watch to make sure wildfires that threatened several homes don't rekindle.
There were three fires in Volusia County on Sunday afternoon. Two of the fires were close enough to homes to force evacuations.
Firefighters worked throughout the night to make sure wildfires that threatened homes didn't spread and displace more residents.
Homes were evacuated on Adelia Boulevard in Deltona. More homes were later evacuated just miles away on Wrigley Farms. Hours later, a wildfire broke out near New Smyrna Beach near State Road 415.
Frightened homeowners raced to grab what they could before they made a run for it.
"It got pretty close," said Deltona resident Anna Carlson. "The ashes started coming towards us. We didn't have to evacuate but our friends did."
"One of the neighbors came to our house and yelled there's a fire near our yard," said Martin Vega, a Volusia County resident.
At least 10 families were forced out of their homes in two different areas. It all happened so quickly, some tried to protect their houses before having to pack and go.
"We turned on some hoses and watered the roof and shingles and the house too," said Vega.
The wildfire in Deltona fire grew to about 90 acres and the thick smoke was visible for miles as fire crews worked from the air and the ground
Another fire burned in the area of the Tomoka Wildlife Management, forcing evacuations. That fire grew to only 10 acres and was contained in about 90 minutes.
Residents in both areas were grateful there was no loss of property.
Fire officials still haven't said how either of the fires began but with dry conditions they certainly had plenty of fuel.
