Witness says husband backed into wife with car in Avalon Park, sped off

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

Authorities are investigating after a man was accused of trying to run over his wife, leaving her injured in the road in Avalon Park on Sunday.

Detectives said neighbor Cory Sawyer saw the woman right after her husband's car drove off, and he called 911.

Sawyer said he was walking his dogs when he heard an argument between a husband and wife and then saw it escalate.

“Just something told me to turn around,” said Sawyer. “I saw her dog sitting there and as I got closer, I saw a body lying in the middle of the road, 4 a.m. in the morning.”

Investigators said 27-year-old Joshua Kowalski was fighting with his wife when for some reason, he backed into her with his car, throwing her from the driveway to the road before peeling out as he left the scene.

Kowalski’s wife was taken to Florida Hospital East.  In the morning, she told investigators she wanted to walk 8 miles home through heavy traffic, but her husband was the one who picked her up.

That’s when police pulled him over and arrested him.

“Most domestic violence cases need to be investigated like a homicide, because most of the time, you will not get help from the victim,” said Carol Wick of Harbor House of Central Florida.

It was Sawyer’s witness statement to investigators that led to aggravated battery charges being filed again Kowalski.

Sawyer said he would testify in court, which is evidence the Sheriff's Office said is crucial for bringing the charges.

Authorities said the victim didn't suffer any major injuries. It's unclear if she is cooperating with investigators.
