BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —
A 19-year-old woman is being treated after she was bitten by some sort of wildlife while spending the night in a wooded area in South Brevard County.
The woman, whose name hasn’t been released, was part of a group of seven people who apparently spent the night in the woods after their all-terrain vehicles broke down.
Sheriff’s deputies and fire rescue crews started searching an area off Grant Road after getting a 911 call that the victim was bitten by a venomous water moccasin.
The cellphone call apparently lost service, so rescue crews searched from the ground and air for about an hour when the woman emerged from the woods with her group on their own.
Brevard County fire and rescue crews said the victim was taken to Palm Bay Community Hospital in stable condition. She has since been treated for the injury.
Rescue crews said no snake was located, and witnesses weren’t sure what bit the woman.
Water moccasins are one of four venomous snakes found in the U.S. and throughout Florida. While the snake’s venom is not considered the most toxic of the venomous snakes, it can still be fatal.
