ORLANDO, Fla. —
A group of Walmart workers spent Black Friday protesting at several Central Florida Walmart stores.
They were demonstrating against what they call unfair working conditions.
Alex Rivera, a former Walmart employee, said he lost his job a couple months ago after trying to get some of his workers to join in a walk-out on Black Friday.
"Only because I was speaking out about their wages and the way they were treating their employees, they were retaliating against me and after that they fired me," said Rivera.
The protestors said they had every intention of sending a message to the company with a silent protest inside the store on Goldenrod Road, but as they walked off the bus, protestors were told they would be arrested if they even tried.
"You guys seem prepared for them coming here. What's your reaction to them?" asked Channel 9 reporter Racquel Asa.
Walmart employee Steve Finch answered, "Well, I … once again I can give you the media relations department, OK?"
The protestors took their actions to another store on Princeton Street. Once inside, they screamed their message to unsuspecting customers.
"They work here all year long, it's right for them to get paid," said shopper Victor Carbone.
When asked why he still comes to shop at Walmart, Carbone responded, "I come here because of their prices."
In a statement about Friday's demonstrations, Walmart said, "Organization United Under Respect for Walmart group does not speak for the 1.3 million Walmart associates. We had our best Black Friday ever and O.U.R. Walmart was unable to recruit more than a small number of associates to participate."
