Mom Arrested For Leaving Kids Home Alone

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —

A mother in Brevard County was charged Saturday with leaving her two young children home alone for 14 hours. One of the children was an 18-month-old; the other was only 3 years old.

Sheriff deputies were first called Saturday morning, when a woman found the youngest child wandering down the road from his house on Akorn Street near Port St. John. Deputies later found the child’s 3-year-old brother home alone.

Deputies tracked the children's mother down at another home in the same neighborhood.

Sarah Petty admitted she had been drinking the night before. Deputies say she was still intoxicated around noon.

Petty claims she thought the children were with their grandmother who lives next door.

The children are now with their father. He had been working in south Florida all week.
