ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
Officials said two grenades had to be detonated after they were found in an east Orange County neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
Fire rescue hazmat crews and deputies responded to a home on Llewellyn Road in Christmas around 2:00 p.m.
According to officials, children were playing in the yard when they found a pineapple-style grenade that appeared to be inactive and was rusted, officials said. Deputies closed Llewellyn Road while the grenade was investigated.
Crews detonated the grenade as a precaution. While checking the area for any more explosive devices, a second grenade was found not far from the first one.
The second grenade had to be detonated as well. A sheriff's office spokesman told WFTV they will investigate further to determine how the grenades got there.
"We're going to do follow up with the Army Explosives Ordinance Division to see if there are more out here or find out what happened on this property earlier to see if any type of military training occurred," said Lt. Paul Hopkins with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
The road was reopened shortly after the second grenade was detonated.
