ORANGE COUNTY, FL —

A Winter Haven man was arrested on charges of reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident after an alleged street racing crash near the Orlando International Airport.

Police said Ronald Lastra, 22,  lost control of his car, and then crashed into a group of onlookers and several other vehicles early Sunday morning. Police said Lastra fled the scene.

Investigators said two people, 28-year-old Heriberto Marin and a 17-year-old, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police said eight others were injured, but sought medical attention at hospitals on their own.

"A guy was coming down super fast and hit some other cars down the street. [He] hit like seven people.  [There were] people laying on the floor," said witness Jean Sanchez

Police said Lastra was driving about 100 mph when he lost control of his Mitsubishi Mirage.

The managers of the Central Florida racing complex said county leaders can help the racing problem by allowing local tracks to hold regular races for young drivers, despite noise concerns from neighbors.

"I think it's a tragedy.  I think it's something we warned about that could possibly happen," said Vinne Barber of Central Florida Racing Complex.

Police said Lastra was also charged with participating in a race. His bail amount is just $3,000.
