Orange County GameStop Robbers Weren't After Cash

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

Deputies said, when armed robbers held up a GameStop store on Monday morning, it wasn't the cash in the register they were after, but the products sitting on the shelves.

With a PlayStation 3 going for $600 a pop and an XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii not far behind, thieves targeting a video game store can forget the cash and go for the game systems.

Investigators said games are what armed robbers were after when they targeted the GameStop on Hiawassee and Silver Star. A manager, the only one in the store at the time, said two men entered shortly after it opened, posing as customers.

"They came in asking about game systems and normal things a customer might ask, then they pulled a gun," said Det. Jason Sams, Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The manager said the two ordered him to empty out the safe, then walked him to the back and had him pack up several game systems.

The two escaped out the back. Deputy's dogs were able to track them down an alley next to the Woodlands apartment complex behind the strip mall, but that's where they lost the scent.

Investigators initially believed they had surveillance video of the crime, but when they went to pull the tape, they found the thieves had gotten to it first, a sign they knew what they were doing.

"This is not something you do without planning it out in advance," Sams said.

Detectives believe their robbers jumped into a car to get away. A sheriff's helicopter searched the area, but found no sign of them.
