Police Fire Shots After Road Rage Incident

LAKE MARY, Fla. —

Late Thursday afternoon, gunshots were fired while Lake Mary police officers were trying to chase down a road rage suspect. It happened near a busy shopping plaza off Lake Mary Boulevard and ended with a suspect in custody.

Police say the suspect flashed a gun during a road rage incident on Lake Mary Boulevard in Sanford. He ran from police in a yellow Saturn until he reached a Lake Mary Boulevard complex. He ditched the car and headed for the woods.

It’s unclear if the suspect pulled the gun on officers in the complex, but there was some reason police felt threatened by the driver, who abandoned that Saturn, and several shots were fired.

The suspect wasn't hit and neither was anyone in any of the nearby offices, but a few windows and nerves were shattered in the process. Eyewitness News spoke both with police and an eyewitness who was teaching a real estate class when the gunfire broke out.

“The guy starts running, they’re shooting, about 15 shots rang out,” eyewitness Freddie Crespo said.

“Chased him into the wood lines and that’s where we got him,” explained Officer Zach Hudson, Lake Mary Police Department.

Police said they did recover a handgun behind the building. They were still collecting casings late Thursday afternoon. They'll also have to fill out a damage report on the shattered windows and a Volvo inadvertently hit by a cruiser.
