Teacher Accused Of Sex With Student In Classroom

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. —

A Seminole County teacher was arrested and accused of having sex with a student in his classroom. Investigators say teacher Craig Meyer had sex with a 15-year-old Seminole High School student at least 17 times.

The 42-year-old teacher was free on $11,600 bond Friday and was suspended from the Seminole County School District, but not yet fired. Meyer's victim was easily young enough to be his own daughter. He was booked into the Seminole County jail early Thursday evening on 17 different sex offense charges.

In late June, investigators got a tip that Meyer had been having sex with one of his students four years ago, during the 2006-2007 school year. All told, investigators believe there were at least 17 different encounters.

"Something's wrong with him if he's doing that with a 15-year-old," said Disah Kolassiba.

Kolassiba just graduated from Seminole High and her younger sister goes to Millennium Middle, the school Meyer transferred to in 2007 after leaving Seminole.

"It was actually several months that the acts took place over," said Kim Cannaday, Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says Meyer's victim opened up about the sex just recently, four years after it happened. The victim, now 19, claims she and Meyer had sex at least 17 times, usually right under the noses of fellow faculty, students and family.

"Some of the acts actually took place on school campus, in his classroom, while others actually took place at the victim's home," Cannaday said.

The district suspended Meyer immediately and the superintendent's letter to him reads: "Further be advised that I will file a recommendation ... that your employment be terminated."

No one would open the door at Meyer's home Friday. Parents, whose kids have been in school with Meyer recently, don't like what they hear.

"You feel like our students are not safe in the school with a teacher like that," parent Zida Figueroa said.

The sheriff's office isn't aware of any other victims at this time.

"There's always the possibility that there could be other victims out there and we would encourage those individuals to contact somebody," Cannaday said.

School officials also told WFTV Meyer has a very clean record, at least on the surface, with no discipline, no letters of complaint and no unsatisfactory reviews in his file. He had not previously been arrested, either.
