Teen Caught With AK-47 At UCF Student Apartments

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

University of Central Florida police arrested an 18-year-old who had an AK-47 and plenty of ammo at a student apartment complex. It's the second time since January that Johnathan Taylor was arrested for having a gun on campus or nearby.

Campus police consider UCF as a small city of 47,000 faculty and students. They admit there is some gun crime, but this was the first time this year someone been arrested carrying some serious weapons, an AK-47 assault rifle with more than 50 rounds and a loaded revolver.

The guns were found Saturday afternoon in the car driven by Taylor.

"I was surprised to see him again. I was surprised to see he had a handgun with an AK-47 in the truck of the car," said Sgt. Woody Furnas.

Taylor was arrested after police found he was carrying a concealed, loaded handgun.

When Taylor showed up on campus again in March, he was given a formal trespass warning. That's how Furnas recognized him while investigating a call at the Pegasus Pointe student housing complex.

"He kinda ducked his head away from me, which drew my attention to him," Furnas said.

But it wasn't until the third encounter, while being held for violating that trespass order, that Taylor made the mistake that got him in a whole lot more trouble.

"He kinda bent down and then threw some car keys next to the car he was standing beside," Furnas said.

That prompted Furnas to look between the car's front seats, where the .38 revolver was in plain view.

Taylor was arrested for armed trespass, a third-degree felony. He bonded out of jail Sunday morning.
