BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —
HOUSE ON WATER: See Images Of The House
It's a house with a unique waterfront view. About a week ago, people who live along the Indian River Lagoon north of the Beachline saw the neighbors moving in, pushed by a pontoon boat.
"I was mowing around and looked up and thought, ‘What in the world?" Brevard County resident Elber Kelly said.
Originally, the house adorned with a confederate flag was tied to a dock, but recently set anchor just off the river bank. WFTV couldn't reach the owner, but neighbors say he boards a small boat everyday to come ashore for work.
At first, people living on solid ground didn't know what to make of it.
"It is weird. I've never seen anybody build a house and then float it out into the middle of the river for no apparent reason," Kelly said.
Now, some are wondering how long it will stay.
"If you drive on down through here, it looks like it's in front of everybody's house, you know, no matter what angle it's in front of your house," Brevard County resident Valerie Adcock said.
The people who live along the water may not like the house out there, but there is little they can do. WFTV contacted the State Fish and Wildlife Commission, which said, as long as it has proper lighting and sanitation equipment, the boat can stay there as long as the owner wants it to.
Still, residents are wary.
"There's no way it can stay in a storm. I don't care how many anchors he puts out," Adcock said.
Some fear one big storm and someone will end up with an entire house in their yard.
The Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife were both notified about the house on the water. The house has been inspected and the owner has been told he is in compliance with boating regulations.
