BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. —

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said they have arrested a 23-year-old man who hit and killed a pedestrian and left the scene Sunday morning.

Martin Hardin III, 23, has been charged with DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash.

Troopers said the crash happened around 8:00 a.m. Sunday at Holder Road and Holder Park Drive in Mims.

According to FHP, Hardin lost control of his Ford Taurus while going around a curve in the roadway. The vehicle crossed both lanes of the road before driving onto the sidewalk.

The pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old William Thomas III, was walking on the sidewalk when he was hit. Fire rescue officials said they airlifted the victim to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Hardin ran away from the scene and tried to hide behind a fence nearby, officials said. Troopers told WFTV he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Hardin has been booked into the Brevard County Jail.
