Melissa becomes a tropical storm

MIAMI —

Melissa has attained tropical storm status as it races over the central Atlantic.
 
The storm's maximum sustained winds late Wednesday morning were near 60 mph. No additional strengthening is expected and the U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to begin weakening in the next 24 hours.
 
Melissa is centered about 1,155 miles west of the Azores and is moving east-northeast at 30 mph.
