7 things to know now: N. Korea missile; Cruz picks Carly; toddler kills mom

What to know now:

1.  North Korean missile: The South Korean Defense Ministry is reporting that North Korea fired a mid-range missile Thursday that "seems to have failed" after exploding shortly after it was launched. It's the second failed ballistic missile launch for the country in as many weeks.

2.  Toddler kills mom: A 26-year-old woman was killed Tuesday when her 2-year-old son shot her in the back as she was driving in Milwaukee. Patrice Price died after her son found her boyfriend's .40-caliber pistol on the floor of the car's back seat, picked it up and pulled the trigger. Price's boyfriend is a security guard, and he had left his  gun belt under the front seat of the car Price was borrowing. The child had not been restrained in a car seat.

3. Cruz picks Carly: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz  announced his choice for running mate Thursday in a move that was a little unusual in presidential campaigns. Cruz said he would run with Carly Fiorina should he win the Republican nomination for president. Cruz acknowledged that candidates normally didn't make that kind of choice until they had secured their party's nomination, but noted that this election cycle had been a bit unusual.

4. Hastert sentenced: Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison Wednesday for crafting illegal loans to hide  the fact he was paying hush-money to cover up his molestation of high school athletes decades ago. Hastert, 74, who came to court in a wheelchair, listened for nearly an hour to Judge Thomas Durkin as he sentenced him to more prison time than prosecutors had suggested.

5. Prince and pills: CBS News is reporting that prescription pain medication was found in Prince's possession and in his home when he died last week. According to the story, local authorities are working with the Drug Enforcement Administration in investigating the singer's death. Prince, 57, was found dead in an elevator at his home near Minneapolis. There is no word yet whether drugs played a part in his  death.

The president of the Philippines says a militant Islamist group that stands accused of beheading a Canadian man may have had other victims in mind. President Benigno Aquino III said the group -- Abu Sayyaf – may have been plotting to kidnap boxing great Manny Pacquiao and/or members of the president's own family.
